“GOD!!! I HATE MY JOB!!”
One remark that I had been accustomed to at some point in my life but did not fully realize until I was in the same scenario.I recall getting a call from a friend who was stuck between taking a PPA that paid 150k or an internship role in a production company where she could improve her scriptwriting skills; it was her service year.
I was at a loss for what counsel to provide at this point. Even though I was attempting to avoid being accused of influencing her decision at the time, I felt compelled to say something.
Speaking from my experience, I was able to open up to her and tell her anything that was on my mind. I explained to her how failing to do something you enjoy can leave you feeling miserable and dissatisfied. You will constantly feel that something is missing, but you will not be able to pinpoint what it is.
Most people hate their jobs not because the role is not good enough, but because they've been trapped in a circle of unconnected interests. You dread Mondays not because it's a bad date, but because you're dreading the long, uninteresting hours ahead of you.
So you wake up on a Monday morning and declare aloud, "God, I hate my job," becoming increasingly despondent or depressed at the thought of it and wish you could call in sick all the time.
Why do individuals continue to work in jobs that are progressively killing them?
Simply put, "For the Money." The thought of mounting debt will cause you to reconsider your passion and accept whatever comes your way. "So we give up our mental health for some change, so what, no one is going to pay those bills?"
This is not a terrible or wrong choice; it only becomes wrong if you do not attempt to leave the circumstance but make it permanent.
"Do what you have to until you can do what you want to," has always been my mantra. Make a plan for how long you would stay at a job, then use the income to improve your skills in the area where you're most passionate and keep moving forward.
Everyone makes sacrifices; perhaps this is the smallest sacrifice you can make to help you through your journey and to your objective.
I found my passion and I believe you will find yours eventually.
